Anyone know how to get something like that to appear in a video like chat, with transparency? Thanks.

Sorry...wish I could help you. Maybe in the graphics settings, see if you can change that one specific area using an edit program.
I FOUNDZORS IT
After Effects has something similar... but nothing is the same </3.
I wish I could find how Monstercatmedia makes their sound waves :(

It's called an Equalizer effect, and apparently it's relatively easy.
If you're using After Effects (which seems to be industry standard for heavier VFX editting like this), the Youtube Video here has a similar output to the video in the first post. You can probably make it match better with some tweaking.

When did you learn this?

Truth be told?
I first saw this in a Brony song remix video on Youtube. This one to be exact (Korw's remix of Fighting is Magic's original Twilight Sparkle stage theme).

Do note that in the description, it actually says how they got help with the Equalizer visualization. Apparently it's a link, which I'll post here too.

Never stop learning, kids.
Nice Col_StaR. Bet that will help someone. The link you might want is here, if Col didn't do it already: http://mocarg.com/?p=139 <-- The video. And...
Never stop learning, kids.
That's what school is for. ;)
