There is a setting for that, it's commands only or something like that. So you can see the server announcements.

No, it takes the chat box away, you wouldnt be able to see anything, if that doesnt work then just put the opacity down to 0.

I like this idea, though it wouldn't be of much use to other mods and I since we need to see the chat to moderate it Still, I would like to see this added, it shouldn't be too difficult to code.
