Holding your sword out

Not holding out a sword is a good strategy to use; they're unsure of what weapons you possess and recklessly charge into a fight, usually when you have great gear. If you really want to take things further, however, you can hold out a mediocre weapon (e.g: a wooden sword) in your first slot of your hotbar and then put your real weapon (e.g: an iron sword) to switch to before getting into a fight.
Having an empty slot is better, so a quarter of the screen isn't covered. Easy hotbar set up:
1 Sword,fns,fishing,bow (personal prefrence.)
2^
3^
4^
5 gold app
6 high sat food
7 low sat food
8 empty
9 arrows

No offence Blitz, but PvP is my sort of thing, as you can probably guess. Having an empty second slot is not good at all; you can quickly switch to a secondary weapon such as a bow if needed to do so and switch back again; you could also have a fishing rod which may in the end safe your life. It's like saying you shouldn't use a bow because it covers 1/4 of your screen.

Anyway, my hotbar set up is:
1. Sword
2. Bow - Essential secondary; can be game changer; easy to switch to.
3. Fishing Rod - Essesntial secondary; can be game changer; easy to switch to.
4. Flint and Steel - More important to have a bow and fishing rod closer so you can switch to them when needed quickly; flint and steels require timing so I usually have my fishing rod out before using one.
5. Golden Apples
6 to second last slot: Food (preferably cooked) - this varies; if I feel I may want more than 1 flint and steel in a slot, I'd replace 5 with a second FNS, 6 with golden apples and 7 to the second last slot with food.
Final slot: Arrows - knowing how many I have but not needing to do a quick switch.

How would I take offense to you saying PvP is your thing? And it's all personal prefrence I hope you realize, you don't need 3 slots for food in any way shape or form, or multiple fns, once one is gone, quickly replace it. Your hotbar won't affect PvP. I've killed people in full iron with a wood sword in 1 and melons in 2. Lol.

I was hoping you wouldn't think you're some kind of noob or something when I replied with "no offence". Also, I know you don't need 3 slots of food, which is why I said it varies, depending on whether I have more flint and steels or not. Also, in many instances they can't quickly be replaced; flint and steels are generally used in PvP or whilst being chased - it's not like I have time to quickly stop, go to i and replaced it if there's someone 4 blocks behind me. Also, a hotbar does affect PvP; it's not like you can't kill people without having a certain hotbar, but it affects how well we can access certain items and this can mean the difference between living and dying - it would seem silly to have a sword in 1st slot and a fishing rod in the middle when they're generally meant to be used as a combo together (at least in pvp terms).

I rarely hold my sword out, I usually hold my bow or fishing rod. If people see me with a sword they generally start to run away.

a bow is my true weapon. it makes me feel safe in combat. I always hold a bow. It's basically my best weapon.
