This is true.

You could go the Linux route temporarily, which isn't bad, annoying though. I'm not positive if this works but you could always deactivate windows on the current system and use that key on the new one.

I'd probably say another $300-400 depending on what os, monitor, or peripherals are needed. I had those before hand so I was fine.
I have a monitor, I'd just need a keyboard ;P
Linux may have to do for a while, I'm sure my mum would contribute

Suggestion, don't cheap out on the power supply, if that derps up the rest of your hardware could get fried.

Thats about the same amount I spent on mine, take a look at this if you want an idea of what you can get.

Alright so that's one thing you don't have to worry about.

Keyboard you can always upgrade later so you could find a really cheap one online that works well. I'm just using one that came with another computer. (Its the best though.)

I was on Linux for a while, Skype and minecraft were no problem. Anything that a regular user does won't be a problem as long the program is on Linux.

Harddrive? Lol
Already had a few. :D

i would go with windows 7 right away
That's what I would suggest, but despite what people think, Linux isn't that bad, your not losing to much if you don't need any windows only programs.

For the most part, a lot of what you can do on windows you can do on Ubuntu. Just sometimes you have to take extra steps to do things. But that's what Google is for.

I'm assuming you mean graphics card....whichever is worth the money it costs and is more reliable.
AMD is probably more reliable of the two, NVidea seem to be better quality though, depends what you want. I'm going to be going for an AMD when I buil my new pc

I'm in UK so it's a little different, I'm looking to spend around £1000 which is like $1550.

CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K 4-Core Haswell CPU @ 4.0GHz (£234.99)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD3 Motherboard (£109.99)
Graphic Card: AMD ATI Radeon HD 7970 3GB Graphics Card (£347.99)
Memory: 16GB Corsair Vengeance 1866MHz Gaming RAM (£129.99)
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 1TB (£50)
Case: Corsair Carbide 400R Case (£92.99)
Power Supply: Corsair Gamer Series GS600 80+ 600W PSU (£77.99)
Cooling: Corsair Hydro H60i Water CPU Cooler (£69.99)

Probably about £1100 actually, around $1600 for you.
