Am I the only one that despises horses? Not simply because they should be working on bug fixes like darkrai said, but simply because it ruins the game?
I'm probably one of very few that has played since alpha and actually understands what I mean, but it used to be simple old Minecraft. Then, the Beta 1.7 announcement came along and everyone was expecting and hoping for the Adventure update where you would be able to do an adventure/questing thing in Minecraft (I'm still waiting, Mojang). 1.7 came with no such update, and they send they were putting it back to 1.8 So I waited for like 2 months for Beta 1.8 to come out and it did, with no adventure update.
Instead they brought enchantments, brewing and, (worst of all, not sure if this was MC1.0 though. Probably :p) the End. Enchantments just ruined the game. They made for OP gear, a more luck based thing that takes hours to even try. I sort of like brewing, sort of dislike it. They ruined the game for me, and completely took away the simplicity of Minecraft.
Some of the newer potions are quite OP (cough, invisibility, cough) and of the older ones, it was fun at first but then became too time consuming and simple. I think brewing should take a bit more effort without ruining Minecraft in all it's basic glory.
The End. I hated it since it was first mentioned. An end to a game that goes on 5ever? No way! I wouldn't accept it. It brought an end to the 1 game I spent the most time playing. I never liked the concept of endermen in the first place, but at this point I don't dislike them very much. But the end, with the enderdragon, once completed, left me with a sense that I was done with this game and should move on to the next. The only reason I haven't done that yet is because of the resetting Minecraft minigames, such as this. I got bored of survival completely because I had completed it, I had beat the enderdragon.
Then even more came out recently. Fireworks? Completely useless. Bats? Even more useless. Fireworks make Minecraft seem too high-tech. What do you use them for, and why do you craft them? Absolutely no reason, unless you're completely bored. And bats. What do you do with them? Name them Dillon and move on with your life. They don't even drop anything!
Now horses. I loved being able to ride pigs, but this completely cancels that out. I will be riding on my pig while everyone else will be riding storage donkeys? This is madness. It's too easy, they're too strong and in general they are just way overpowered.
So that's the end of my rant on Minecraft. The only reason I still play it is because of MCSG and because I have nothing better to do with my life. Kudos to anyone who read it all.

I sort of agree and disagree. I know the "Old Minecraft" feel your talking about (I joined in beta 1.3). Actually, I've always considered pre-1.8 (Adventure update) and post 1.8 to be slightly different games. the 1.7 back era was a more basic, and more challenging game. I agree, the End was a bad edition. But, that's kind of the extent of my hatred for newer updates. 1.8's sprinting, brightness, food bar, and new world gen (although pre-1.8's generation was cooler IMO) made the game more fluent. I've always seen enchanting and potions as an endgame, the items you get when you transfer from the "Scraping by to survive" to the "Building my empire" stages. Prior to these updates, you're constantly managing recourses and struggling not to starve. The mindcrack servers (Pre 1.8 map and post 1.8 map) further prove my point. The old, had much smaller buildings and generally had a lot more as of hunting and farming. The new updates opened the door for big massive structure that can be safely built because of health regen and better tools.
You can't really vilanize Minecraft for the few bad features you named, there are plenty of ones that are good and add to the experience IMO. Breeding, pistons, improved redstone, new wood types, and the food bar (Regen.). The three in here that are REALLY important to me, are helth regen, breeding, and every single new block type. Building style has improved amazingly since stone bricks, the new wood blocks, sideways logs, the newer way fences work, cobble walls, and any other thing I forgot to mention (greatly thanks to creative mode). Breeding and all of the new crops (alongside piston farming) have made the new food system nicely manageable. Regeneration, although it makes the game much easier, was a good expanse in my opinion that allowed us to more easily branch out in survival in everything from caving to building. Another underrated bit of the adventure update were all of the new structures. Strongholds are cool, abandoned mineshafts are fun to cave in, but villages.... They're interesting but I don't really enjoy villagers.
Onto the hand, horses. I may get a bit of hate for this, but I like them. They further the game with and interesting, and hopefully worthwhile and time filling new features. There are a few good reasons why. A good market on pure vanilla servers, you can't really sell any ordinary mob on a vanilla server, they're all the same. But horse... You can sell high speed, jump or HP ones you find. Horses are the first useful mob with variance in the game. It will be cool collecting a ranch of horses on a vanilla server, to get the best for traveling, goods transporting (Mules/Donkeys), and PvPing (really can't wait for that...). They seem like the best companion mob added as of yet, and the most useful at that. I'd love for Mojang to allow us to tie horses together (with the fence tying ropes) and allowing us to bring a horse with several mules around for transport. Also, two words, cattle herding. Breeding, if done right, will be very very cool. Trying to collect lots of horses and then get the best features of all of them meshed together, it seems like a very real idea, and a nice rewarding time consuming one at that.
Of course, some things will need to be done correctly. For one, it needs to be very hard to tame one. Lots and lots of wheat and apples, and make sure that better breeds are harder to tame (like in mo' creatures). Make them very common, and make the best horses very very rare. Also, some horses need to be very purposely sub-par. Make breeding a good horse a challenging thing by making 75% of horses very "Meh", still useful, but not OP. Also, give them an original more challenging breeding routine, possibly using the old (maybe they still use it, not sure) method of Mo' Creatures breeding. Get both horses in a room alone, away from other horses, give them a lots of wheat, and then a block item, like a melon, pumpkin, or hay bail. Leave them alone for a while and leave them to mate.
If all of this is adhered to, horses will make a great survival edition.

That's fair enough. And I didn't say there weren't any good aspects to the new updates, because there were many things I loved. I'm not a big fan of the new crops or cobblestone walls, and I'm really not a big fan of the new crops. But most of the newer blocks I like, other than quartz which was something I forgot to mention. I think it's a fairly useless block and it isn't even all that pretty. It doesn't go particularly well with many other blocks, and it's just altogether useless other than for building, which it's also hard to use for.
About horses, I'll agree with that. A Minecraft marketing type thing could be fun, and this makes it interesting. But I think they could have done something like that better, and I really hate how they added it in an update so soon after they made pigs an animal to ride. And I also think with all the big survival servers, it will just be some stupid thing you can't contest with unless you've been on the server from the start and managed to breed horses really fast. I think it could only be fun if you do it with your friends.
Maybe with those additions you suggested to make the breeding more challenging, it could be made slightly more fair. But I still and will probably always feel bad for the poor pigs now made useless other than pork.

Be honest, though, who actually rides pigs for transportation? They're nearly impossible to control and are incredibly wonky. I've played with horses a bit, I'm impressed but not too much so. Mobs don't attack them while you're riding on them, usually they only take creeper damage and get hit by the stray arrow, that needs to be changed. You need to be able to freecam slightly (possibly by holding LeftControl) to make arrow aiming easier, as currently as you turn, there head moves with you. Which brings me to my next point - the turn radius. Rather then having to do a small circly gallop (as they have 4 legs) they spin around on an axis like players do, meaning that they can spin 360's which should be impossible, you shouldn't be able to turn on a dime.

I would ride pigs if they worked properly.

Agreed, Minecraft should focus on fixing the broken things before releasing pointless stuff no one ever asked for.
No one ever asked for?
Horses have been requested ever since even Beta of minecraft :p

Id like to say that the only reason people complain about new updates is because of nostalgia. I feel it too... but that doesnt make me think the updates suck.
The adventure update was planned exactly as it was released but people misunderstood what is was gonna be and thought of it as Adventurecraft (Not sure who will know what I mean), me included.
Also... to strengthen my point on the complaints only being because of nostalgia, I can say that if the game would have had an open beta and alpha, there wouldnt be any complaints at all about potions, enchanting and The End... since they all came with the full relase of the game.
And now theres horses... I knew right when they announced them that they would be the new complaining target, but they've been requested ever since beta at least! Its not something the pulled off without anyone wanting it. I do agree that adding horses makes pig riding pointless... but when you think of it... it was really never useful or efficient.
Its true that the game is FAR more complex now that what it used to be in old school minecraft, I do admit that (i started on beta 1.3) but its the process every game like minecraft goes through. If the game would have stayed the way it was back before the adventure update... no one would be playing it by now... games as successful as Minecraft are like plants, you need to keep watering them or they will eventually die... that game needs to stay fresh and new for it to keep its success.

Id rather have a game I can keep playing that has some updates i dont fully agree with than having a game wich is always the same and if get bored before even playing it an year.

Why read a book? Why play a game? Why build a house? Just like blocks it can be used for more possible creativity. Think about noteblocks, meh useless - who would waste their time on them? But due to them people have thought outside of the box and amazing music using such a small feature. Like that, fireworks can be used to create art; just like drawing, just like building a beautiful house. Basically they're a waste of time, but if you get creative you can create firework shows and interesting effects.

And bats are cool.

In all seriousness the game will go stale if they use their time "efficiently" to fix bugs first. I've learned a few progamming languages and I can confidently say that troubleshooting is atleast 80% of the development. Thus it's a lot easier to create a new mob, block or system like brewing and enchantments then it is to go back and fix networking errors, location glitches which people die for a fix.

Shaun speaks truth! :p

I can bet you that if Noteblocks would have been added after 1.0 they would be high on peoples complaining list of pointless stuff XD :p

That's MCSG o_O Not Minecraft :p

Anyways, solution to all problems: A legit place on the MC website where you can download a minecraft.jar for any previous update :) It would be a bit of work to find them, but once they've got all of them it won't be hard to add the new ones as the updates come out :p
