Is it unusual that I could read both of these without any problems?
Actually it is perfectly normal!:)
The human brain can figure out what a word is supposed to be so long as the first and last letters are generally where they should be, regardless of the arrangement of the letters in between! :)

Yes, but normally there are multiple words that I know have those beginning and end letters so it confuses me which one it is.

I do belive that you shall find that my knowledge of the English language is actually rather extensive! :)
I say.
I say that the person that told us to learn English doesn't know English himself or is talking to someone and didn't quote the post.

Yes, I am Russian and English isn't the first language for me. Since I have been attending an English school for 4 years, I learnt how to speak it fluently and now, I know as my mother language. I have also learnt French and German, and can speak them pretty well.
