The same thing happens to me. I think it's a bug with the new MCSG update that came yesterday with the new map, because I don't remember it happening before yesterday. I could be wrong though, and we should await an answer from other community members.
It's just as you go farther out in the water, as you get closer to the edge of the map.I would also like to check that area out, the interesting part is that my computer is really bad so hopefully minecraft doesn't crash or something

I get massive lag even when I'm on my way to the big boat or something. Not that far out.
