Most likely they got a few pieces at the start, and then killed off a few players holding iron gear before coming towards you.

1. Make a route- Try to create a pathway that achieves the maximum amount of chests in the shortest time, preferably this route should diverge from popular chests, and have alternate paths if necessary
2. Control spawn- Controlling spawn is a powerful tool to have in one's arsenal allowing stronger weapons and proficient armor. Note that controlling spawn is far mar critical in the second survival map.
3. Set priorities- Things such as, crafting an iron sword, getting food, better armor etc... should all be goals achieved before attempting my second suggestion

Personally, I agree that you need the corn to win in the 2nd map just because I can NEVER get stuff that is able to compare to the stuff in the cornucopia, and if there is a really good chest route inside one of the buildings, I always get massacred by mobs in there.
