So, if you're like me, you've been tending to have your fps lag out while in the lobby, waiting for another game, or in the 2nd map (ruined city) after about 30 secs or so. After a few days, I tried the various guides on how to increase memory usage of minecraft -- to no avail. Tinkered around with it a bit tonight, and found that if I REDUCE the memory usage of minecraft (in my case, from 1g to half a gig), the fps lag seems to stop.
What I did was download MagicLaucher, found here: http://www.minecraftmine.org/magic-launcher-minecraft/. Download and launch it; you'll then find a 'setup' tab. Click it, and go to the 'advanced' tab. Under 'Memory', reduce the total about of MB to an appropriate amount (in my example, I reduced it from 1024 MB (1 G) to 512 MB (.5 G). Hit OK, login, and give it a go.
I wager the other guides that show how to adjust memory usage (minecraft.bat, for instance) may still work, but I find this method is more user friendly.
