Players have Black names?

I just joined a server and I didn't spawn at the lobby, I spawned in some random biome. So I killed myself and I spawned in the lobby, but now I have a black name. What does it mean? The only thing I can think of is my Moderator application but Moderators are Red and my application doesn't have a reply. So any idea whats going on?
