Wait... did I really screw up the intro again? Darn it! I did the same thing last time!
1.9, MCGamer, and You
It's been over a year since Minecraft 1.8 originally came out, and over two years since Minecraft 1.7 originally was released. As many of you probably know by now, Minecraft 1.9 is scheduled to be released on Monday, February 29.
1.9 is a very controversial update within communities like ours for one main reason: the drastic changes to the combat mechanics (hence why Mojang has dubbed it "The Combat Update"). Some people love the changes, some hate the changes, and some are rather indifferent. We've been tracking the development of 1.9 and internally updating our system for it for the past several months now. We thought originally that supporting 1.9 meant dropping support for 1.7/1.8, due to the vast changes in the client itself; however, we've been able to overcome a lot of the major technical issues we faced, and implement a system that allows us to support 1.7, 1.8, and 1.9 simultaneously. Thus, although I cannot speak with utmost certainty as to the future, we are not planning on dropping Minecraft 1.7 and 1.8 support at this time.
This has a few caveats, however; one of the most restricting being that 1.9 clients are unable to use any of the newer 1.9 features (such as dual-wielding), since these features do not exist in 1.7/1.8. Attempting to use most of 1.9's new features on our network will result in a message that sounds something like "1.9 features are not enabled on this server". We have plans in mind to incorporate some elements of 1.9 gameplay into the network in the near future; more details on that will be posted when we are ready.
Release Schedule
As Minecraft 1.9 is scheduled to be released on Monday the 29th, we will be updating our network to support 1.9 on Sunday the 28th. This is a two-part process: the first part consists of an update to our game servers, which will be released seamlessly (and silently) without any interruptions, and the second part consists of an update to our proxy servers, which will require a network restart. The game server update will be rolled out sometime during the afternoon/early evening US time, while the proxy server update will be rolled out when it is convenient for each region (preferably during a low point), as usual. In addition, although we hope for a smooth release, there may be network restarts or game server updates as needed to fix any major issues in the days following 1.9's release and adoption.
As stated above, once our network is updated, you will be able to log in with 1.7.10, 1.8.x, or 1.9.
Barring any unforeseen issues, we also plan to update the stable servers to include all of the changes that were made to the beta servers this month at the same time.
Information on 1.8-only Gametypes
The 1.8-only gametypes that are currently on our network will remain 1.8-only for the time being, until Spigot releases their 1.9 update and we update our fork of Spigot to support 1.9. Once they do so, we will update these gametypes, and they will become 1.9-only gametypes.
Thanks once again for flying MCGamer - this is your pilot Devin, signing out!
