Mostly I just go on my routes which always get me at least full iron and iron or diamond sword on any map, kill any people that get in my way, and get as geared as I can before the deathmatch counter starts. I can win by going crazy with kills and getting geared that way too, but I prefer my way because it's more consistent for me. It's just a matter of preference.
