Things you should always have on your Hotbar.

Try to keep your Hotbar organised and have all needed things in it.

1. Sword - No Explanation needed
2. Bow - Same here
3. Flint n' Steel/Fishing Rod - Depends on Map/What you use more
4. Golden Apples - Always have them ready in your Hotbar for quick regen
5. Good Food - By good food, i mean stuff with high saturation (steaks) to fill your saturation level before a fight
6-10. More Food/Other things listed below

Other useful things to have:
Boat - Useful on maps like Breeze to escape
Arrows - Good to see how many you have
Cake - Fast eating when chasing/being chased
Another sword - Should help to get rid of the NCP bug, not sure if it does
Gold Hoes -

Mah hotbar: Hoe-Bow-Dow-Show-Fow-Tier2goldenapples-FishingRod-pocketknife-noodles
Da pocketknife has dagger, extra noodles, extra hoe, extra golden arrows, flamethrower, plasma gun, shower gel, some 20x40cm sized diamonds, alot of money, controller for spaceship, wool and blocks for victorymonuments, god armor (104 times as good as diamond armor) and chests full of 64 of every item in minecraft. (But no "Swords")

There isnt a 10 slot. It goes up to 9

Mine is very similar but a bit different.

-I always keep my bow out. To hide my main weapon and so I can quickly change to 1 or 3 with the scroll wheel

-I like having my arrows down there so I can see how many arrows I have.

-And I think golden apple is best at slot 9 so if you are in a major hurry you can mouse/scroll from slot 1 to 9. This way its essentially the slot in front of your sword which may come in handy if you need it very fast.

8. Cake (In case I need to eat while being chased, so I don't lose much speed)

And, funnily enough, I don't use the mouse wheel
I just reach up and manually hit the keys associated with each slot when I need to switch
