If you have something you'd like to share, we'd love to use what knowledge you'd like to offer!
Well let's start from the beginning (If any information is incorrect I am sorry, I am just going off what I know):
1.) How do they get your IP ?
The first step for every DDoS attack is for the attacker to get your IP address. There are many different ways that they can grab that, I will list some below and show you how to protect yourself against some of them.
  • Skype - This is probably the most common way people steal your IP address as it is extremely easy for people who do not know how to protect themselves. They grab it by using a skype resolver of some sort, this is how you can protect yourself:
On the top of the Skype application there should be the following titles, Skype, Contacts, ect. Navigate to "Tools" , then go to "Options" after that locate to the "Advanced" header and find "Connection", press this and you will have settings ready to be changed. The next step isn't too easy to explain so I will let a picture explain it.

  • Websites - I am not too knowledgeable about this particular area but I will share what I know. This method is often used against staff members. They do this by creating a website which is deliberately made to take peoples IP's and using a URL shortener. I guess there are 2 ways I am aware of that you could protect yourself from these and that is by:
    • Never go on a website that you are unsure of.
    • Use a VPN if you are seriously concerned (I will go more in depth about VPN's later on) A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a private network that changes your IP address in order for you to communicate private information securely over a public network.
How do VPN's work?
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) connects two computers securely and privately over the internet, even though that is a public network. A VPN client on one computer connects to a VPN server on another computer and by using encryption and other security measures, no-one can see what information is being exchanged. -Google

2.) What do you do when you're getting DDoS'd?
Hopefully know that you have read the 1st step you won't be in this situation, anywho let's get into it! When you're getting DDoS'd the options which you have are varied depending on the strength of the attack. Here are some broad tips which you can use to help yourself:
  • Turn on a VPN - As I briefly mentioned previously a VPN changes your IP address which is key in stopping a DDoS attack. When you have a VPN turned on the internet will not be as fast as it usually is for you unfortunately but you should be able to still connect to the internet. Here are some VPN's I strongly recommend on using. Spotflux , Hotspot Shield.
  • Change your IP - There are many ways of changing your IP but it does depend on if you have a static or dynamic IP address (I won't go into them because I don't really know much about them) You can change your IP on your computer by doing this: If you open the CMD (you can do this by pressing the windows key and R) then type into the console ipconfig /release this will cut of your internet. You then type in ipconfig /renew this should then reset your IP address. Another way you can get it changed is by simply phoning your internet provider and ask for an IP address change.
I hope some of that information helped in anyway! I just wanted to express the tiny bit of knowledge about this subject. Thanks for reading! :)
P.S Sorry if I made any grammatical errors, I'm tired... hahaha

Can you explain what these mean? I worry that this is only making your Skype IP static, but I may be completely wrong.

Also, another thing for anyone to answer: can server hosters be DDoSed easier? I had to give my IP to my friends for them to connect to my private server. Does that mean they could DDoS me if they wanted to? I don't have the server on my new PC and I haven't opened it in months, but I'm just wondering if that could be a problem for hosts.

Teamspeak: Just be cautious on what Teamspeaks that are not bigger networks. For example, a clan Teamspeak. You should know who has access to see your ip and if you really do trust them that they will never do anything with it/give it to anyone else.

Because a lot of the times, the owners of said Teamspeaks are younger kids, who haven't matured yet, and if they get mad at someone, they might want to do something for "revenge".

Also someone might say "oh go on this ts" but you have no idea who owns it, ask questions, because at the end of the day it might not be just your own internet, it could be your parents, siblings, roommates, etc. Those people might have jobs/school that do depend on the internet, and sometimes your internet could be down for hours, which could harm more than those using your internet.
