Do you think it's going to happen and if so, when?
Before you say anything, I'd like to clarify some issues.
1. Things can change
2. No one knows the future
3. I know people in the past have made some very wrong predictions, like flying cars by 2000 in the 70s. The only difference is here there is an actual purpose for this. The technology for "flying cars" is extremely dangerous and not necessary, this has severe implications and is almost necessary imo.
What interests me is that these aren't just random people who probably don't know much about technology.

I know it might sound like science fiction, but it's not as far off as it may seem. In 2013 Japanese scientists
were able to simulate 1% of brain activity for 1 second inside the world's 4th most powerful supercomputer.

The computer that was used is known as a peta-scale supercomputer, if you have a really good home computer right now it is a tera-scale, 1000 times less powerful. Intel plans to build an exascale (1000 times more than a peta-scale) supercomputer by 2020. The human brain can do up to 38 exaflops per second or 38000000000000000000 calculations per second.
The implications of this are tremendous if it is actually pulled off, that means that the entire brain will be able to be simulated within a computer in real time. This basically means that you could theoretically create an artificial consciousness inside a computer if you can program it correctly. It could be that consciousness is something that we're unable to manipulate, or it could just be the result of the insane power of our brain. The next step from this is to simulate someone's brain in real time and then hypothetically move it into a computer or artificial body, similar to the movie transcendence.
Tbh I think this will happen within our lifetime, you can call me whatever you want but if you look at computing power and the rate that technology is advancing I think it's perfectly plausible.
