It really depends on a few factors:
  1. When you use it
  2. The sentence you use it in
  3. What it is
So now, let us talk about the first option; when you use it:
So "gg" (and "gf", no difference) are used when the battle is good. When you fight someone and the battle is enjoyable, tense, and exciting. You get hate if you say it when you "clean-up", bowspam, etc...

The sentence you use it in can change everything:
Depends on the context. GG by itself means good game. "l2p newbi! GG!" is trashtalking.
Scott so kindly made the point here, so I do not need to dive in depth on this topic.

Firstly, that person you were speaking to must have some sort of mental issue. There is no way "gg" and "gf" will be insults. Both stand for "good game" and "good fight". But, then again, it depends on the reasons stated above. There are many more, but these are the only few I can think of right now.

depends on how you use it
if ur like x1000 op than the other person and ur like 'gg' you should probably quit right now because you're really the kind of person that no one likes

If you get mad over a randy telling you "gg" then you really have to calm the f down and search its meaning in google. "GG" shows good sportmanship and doesn't have any harsh meaning like "get good". People who think that are just purely mad. Like really, it's just a way to say "good game" in a short way.

Maybe if you chased someone in full iron at 10 hearts the whole game. They bowspammed, abused FnS, and rod rod rodded, but they missed every time. Now if they knocked you off the edge and said "gg" or "gf" would you be so fast to call it a compliment?

I do not consider GG to be an insult, it means good game and therefor is not trash talking. However, the community has changed a lot, when i first started playing nobody trash talked, and people really meant it when they said GG. Nowadays people seem to take things way to personally. I think the person in your example was probably mad that they lost and needed some way to make you seem like a bad person.

I say gg when I win or lose, same thing with good fight, I get hate for it but I don't mind.

First off, you can't abuse FnS, and after all that if they still won the fight then they obviously outplayed you.

I find it really obnoxious and annoying, especially when it is their top priority to type it directly after they kill you, even before they think to pick up your loot or to actually win the game they were just saying is good. That problem is easily solved xD
