As most of you know the second amendment reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

What are your views on Gun laws in the United States? This is a topic I am very interested in and would like to see some other opinions.

Some questions to respond to could include:
Should American citizens be allowed to own firearms?
What is necessary for self-defense?
Do you think people should have to go through background checks?

Also state any opinion you have, just as long as it doesn't break MCGamer Forum Rules.

Should American citizens be allowed to own firearms? I think so
What is necessary for self-defense? If another person is trying to harm you
Do you think people should have to go through background checks? Yes, you don't really want a criminal running around with a gun

Just a quick point.Australia's last massacre was in 1996. That is 19 years ago. Do you know what Australia did after the Port Arthur massacre. They changed the gun laws and look at Australia now. 19 years since a massacre. Its quite simple, change it.

Here in America that would be taking away rights.

I personally believe bearing arms should not be a right but a privilege. Look at the difference between America and Australia in massacres in the last 20 years. They should simply change the second amendment. If it saves life it is worth it.

Yep you can't change the constitution, I'm pretty sure all laws need to be deemed constitutional before passed.

Well the idea is, if criminals will be massacring people anyways, then they won't care about a gun law...

Well if someone has previous then you don't let them own or buy a gun. Thats the way I would have the law.

just to put in my two cents about Australia

It is extremely hard nowadays go get a gun license. You have to be on the electoral role, have to have had no criminal activity in the past 10 years and undergo a test. I don't know how it works in america, but in order to even buy a firearm you need to have a valid license and have it confirmed by the police. Also, about twice or three times a year the police come and check where you have the firearms stored and if they are secure an if they are the ones that you have declared to the police.

My father owns 3 guns and needs a separate license for each (pistol rifle shotgun) so I know an extensive amount about it

Good to get input from someone that knows quite a bit. If this system were to be put in America just imagine what could happen. It would be much more peaceful.

Wow, thats's VERY difficult. In most states (like the south/hunting states) once you turn 21, you can get one with a license. Every state is different in what is allowed and what isn't (I live in North Carolina, and the gun laws are oretty relaxed here, ie. No round limit per magazine, and things like that.) I think vermont you can have a handgun when you are 16 without a license, but don't quote me on that.

It is a strict system, but it would NEVER work here. People are religious about gun rights. Oh, the liberals and anti-gun people would love this, but it would DESTROY every gun producer in the world. Also, this is a huge reason why america is so great, because you have so much freedom. And just because they make a new law making it tougher for citizens to get guns, WILL NOT lower gun violence.
Criminals won't turn over their guns, 1, since they're criminals, and 2, now that all "law-abiding" citizens turn in their guns, violence is so much easier to do. Easy targets right now include schools, since they are gun free, if it is way tougher to get guns, anywhere could be a target.

As an avid gun nut myself, I absolutely love and hate these arguments. Love them because people get very passionate about either side. Hate them because there is no right answer for either side, yet people insist that there is. Throw in a hefty helping of social biases, cultural differences, gun lobbying, human tragedies, and plenty of straight-up crazy, and you've got yourself one of the most difficult social issues of our time.

I am a huge gun nut, but I would gladly accept never being allowed to use a gun if it meant that everyone in our society could live in a greater standard of living than they do now.

In lieu of a 30 page doctoral thesis on the matter (don't doubt that I couldn't write it), I will say this: with or without guns, humanity chooses whether it lives by harmony or by violence; the issue at hand is purely one of individual action, social responsibility, and cultural maturity as we decide how much we are willing to work, risk, and sacrifice for a social ideal. Guns are not the issue, but they're simply the latest polarizing tool in the struggle for (or perhaps against) human nature.
