College Comptuer/Tablet

Hey, Ya'll!
As some of you know, I'll be studying at a university as of next fall. While I have my amazing desktop, I don't really have anything portable to take to classes, or work on projects on-the-go. I'm majorly deciding between a tablet and a laptop.

Tablet:
Lighter weight
Smaller size
Detachable keyboard (Sometimes)

Laptop:
Somewhat better battery
Ability to run more intense programs (Auto CAD)

I mainly need something to keep up with the tasks involved with getting a degree, while still being functional. Which should I get? A tablet or a laptop, and which one?

Personally, if I went for a tablet, I would go for the Surface Pro 3. Not too sure about what laptop. Either way, let me know!

Edit: It'd be nice if it were somewhat cheap XD

I would go for that surface pro, I think it can handle what you need for a degree

Another small note: I still plan on using my desktop in college, so it would be awesome to be able to share files between the two devices. I believe the Surface Pro has something like that.

Depends on what your studying, a little bit. Here in england, most university's have lectures streamed/uploading onto their website. So a laptop isn't as needed as it used to be. Mind you though, you may need something portable, Im usre you have you reasons. So why not notpad?

On a serious note though, I'd go for a laptop, not a tablet. The Pro's of a laptop vastly outweigh the 1 con of price.

Well, what type of classes are you taking...?
For example, if you're taking designing classes like art, video game design, etc. then obviously laptop.
But if it's history, mathematics, or something of that variety then all you need is a tablet.

Also, remember that you can use Cloud-based services like Google Documents in order to share files between your portable device and desktop.

You'll want a dedicated laptop. Tablets don't have the specs nor the development ability as a dedicated laptop does, and those are pretty essential for the CompSci classes you'll be taking. I use a dedicated laptop, and it allows me to start programming in lecture, as opposed to taking notes on a tablet then programming later.

If you wish to do stuff like CAD, though, you'd need a dedicated desktop, and a hefty one at that. I'd suggest a laptop for school and a beefy rig for more serious stuff; I run that combination, and it serves me well.

I will most certainly be doing some CAD work, and I have a desktop completely capable of doing it
