So why should we open doors for women? I sure as hell don't.
some cool thing called overall manners? opening doors for ANYONE used to be a basic gesture of courtesy but no one really does it anymore, and it's really attractive when boys actually have manners anyway.

It's not like people can't open doors themselves

I find it interesting that we're having this discussion here, in a Minecraft gaming community, when Minecraft has one of the most gender-balanced player demographics out there. It's still not entirely conforming with the gender demographics of the planet, but it's closer to it than most games being played today.

Here's the dilemma I have with the issue of gender inequality (and most other inequalities, for that matter):

On the one hand is the lofty ideal that equality should be for everyone. Girls and Guys shouldn't be defined by their gender first, and their characteristics (e.g. Gamer) second. We shouldn't be subjected to discriminatory titles like "Girl Gamer", which reinforces gender discrimination by creating a societal out-group which is considered separate from the regular "gamer" group. I don't buy the, "it's only instinctive" argument as a justification for discrimination either; human instinct also allows for rape, theft, and murder, but those have been successfully kept in check for the benefit of society. Men should not be making a point to treat women differently based purely on their sex, whether they're white-knighting or demanding nude pics. Males and Females deserve to play the games they want to play in a community they want to inhabit, and it's only fair and equal that we allow them to.

On the other hand is the unfortunate reality that gender inequality is deeply rooted in a cultural and biological way. The fact is that, despite our ideals, we're different even on a genetic level. Men and Women are naturally predisposed to act certain ways, and human nature naturally learns to discriminate between two unalike things in adolescence (it helped us survive knowing that two alike things can be very different). Homo Sapiens used this to survive for thousands of years during a savage time that no longer exists, but you can't unwrite thousands of years of biological conditioning just because the last 50 years have been highly progressive. To this ends, people have exploited those biological differences to suit their own ends, reinforcing the gender gap for their own benefit. Whether it exploits biological impulses (sex appeal and gender-specific stimuli) or social constructions (wage gaps and social expectations of gender), someone uses the system to their advantage. To that end, Men and Women are equal in their vulnerability to be exploited and abused.

Which side will win? That depends on how willing we are to work towards an ideal.

This isn't a gaming community issue: it's a social issue that we're tackling now. There have been considerable ground gained in the last hundred years (women are no longer considered property, like livestock or slaves), but there is still inequality to be conquered.

I just hope that there isn't too much gender abuse in our community now; if there is, I will punish those responsible.
