How to counter people with longer reaches?

Well, we all come across those few people who's ping LITERALLY IS -5 or something ridiculous. I have a ping of roughly 150-175, and their extra block range doesn't make me too happy, especially when they use the fishing rod over and over again, making mine pointless. It just turns into a fight of who can spam it the most, and who will miss first, or just give up.

Flint and steel? Eh...not gonna help too much. Maybe then bow spamming, but that can only last so long depending on the player. They get such easy combos on me...does anyone else have some helpful tips?

NOTE: This is not a thread about me complaining over ping, this is me asking how to counter their ping.

Similar to Moderator Applications, it's quality over quantity for fishing rods.
While one person may use their fishing rod five times in a fight, if the second person uses it once but then chains it into a good combo... sorry, person #1, but you lose. Make your casts count. They should be efficient and effective. Spamming it takes time away from when you can hit with your actual sword, and that gives you a disadvantage.
If you can light them on fire, it'll interrupt their sprinting for you. While with the 1.7 sprint key it's not as major as it used to be pre-1.7, it still does help, AND deals an extra 3.5 hearts of damage.

Oh, and make sure to play on the region closest to you, for optimal ping, and use an ethernet cord if you can. Make sure your internet settings are all fine and dandy, and that you don't have anything lagging you.
Also, if you're using ./ping to measure your ping, try taking the number it gives you, and dividing by two. It's inaccurate.

When I'm getting bad ping I tend to use certain tactics which don't rely on your connection to the server as much. The one I use the most is running away and then doing a quick turnaround without using the rod. Generally it will surprise your opponent, and knock them back, meaning that however much better their ping is, they will find it hard to hit you back and you can combo them more easily.

If you don't like getting hit, keep your distance with the rod and bow

Seems so, but if they do the same...they CAN outmatch you if they're good enough. Ping really can screw someone over if plan b doesn't work out...
