I think a thread like this can help change people's minds. People who read this on the forums can learn to stop supporting threads titled "Who is the best MCSGer?" and "What maps do you like?" and start supporting threads that are interesting.
My biggest pet peeve is the Tips and Strategies section in the MCSG section of the forums. At least one thread gets made every day by some random kid who thinks he is shattering the world with his amazing PvP tips, but is actually restating information we have already heard hundreds of times. As I look at the front page of MCSG Tips and Strategies right now I see:
- 3 threads with Turbulence chest routes
- 3 threads asking desperately for PvP help
- 1 thread with a funny video about some kid who sucks at flint and steel. Just a pointless joke, really.
- 3 threads with "Pro Tips and Tricks" which are basically summarized Huahwi videos.
- 4 threads that have nothing to do with strategy or PvP at all, but ask what texture pack you use, what music you listen to, what keyboard you use, and what hotbar arrangement you use. The only thing you can learn from those four threads are people's opinions and how rich they are.
- My library of tactics, which offers dozens of diverse tactics that many experienced players haven't even heard of. It got four replies, yet I spent three hours compiling that guide.
They were good replies, but other pointless threads in that section are receiving 10-15 replies on average, which is too much for a thread that has already been made 20 times.
If we want to show people that they are making dumb threads, don't even reply. When only four people replied to my library of tactics, I felt like an idiot. If someone makes a thread titled "What is your favorite map?", it should ideally be locked within an hour without a single reply to show the person that that thread was unneeded. Better yet, don't even look at it.
