I am making a thread to show the many tactics I have seen people use with single weapons, and by combining multiple weapons. Many of these are practical, and some are not as much. Some need extensive practice or perfect surroundings. Feel free to suggest tips or other tactics you have seen.

Sword
  • Strafe: This is the most basic tactic you can use. When strafing, you go around your enemy in circles and switchbacks. This makes it harder for them to aim and hit you.
  • Sneak up criticals: This is a tactic I use when I am coming up behind someone who is crafting or in a chest and they do not see me. I stop moving, (so they don't get knocked back) jump, then right as I stop going up and start going down, I begin clicking as fast as I can. You will get continuous critical hits because a complete jump takes a little over half a second and you can hit someone again after exactly half a second. If you are attacking someone in full iron and you have an iron sword while doing this tactic, it will only take five or six hits to kill them.
  • Water sneak up: If someone out in the water is anxiously engaged in a bow fight, swim out to them. Get directly below them and begin swinging. You should be able to finish them off entirely as long as your do not sprint and you maintain your lower ground.
  • Block-hitting: Block hitting has been called useless many times, by many people. There are however, a few situations in which you should block-hit. One is in any situation in which your enemy has no chance of strafing you. Another is when fighting on the underside of someone who is trying to knock you off of a high surface. This not only reduces your damage, if makes the knockback far less significant. You may also block-hit underwater if you have the depth advantage. Finally, you can block hit out in the open a little if your ping is good.
  • Blocking arrows: Any time you don't think you can avoid getting hit, block with your sword. Most commonly, this is in water or in a bow shoot-out on land. If you are chasing someone and they do a quick turn around with a bow in hand, you had best block even if you think you are close to killing them. If they do damage on you, your saturation and hunger will go down and greatly increase your chance of death within the next couple of minutes.
Bow
  • Various drawbacks: A fully charged bow does either 4.5 or 5 hearts of damage. A medium always does 3. A small charge does 0.5. Note that damage done is because of how fast the arrow is traveling. Arrows less charged back will go slower, but a fully charged goes 53 blocks per second. Arrows also dip in water, so it is best to aim low when shooting water targets.
  • Dodging: The goal when you are being shot down is to be as random as possible while distancing yourself from the opponent. Move in any way you can that is not easy to predict. Do not move back and forth, as experienced players know that all they have to do is shoot a couple blocks ahead of the direction you turned. If you are in water, get as deep as possible so that you cannot be seen.
  • Turn around shot: When being chased closely, draw back your bow either fully or double, then turn around and shoot your chaser. This should knock them back enough to avoid getting hit. A full drawback will do more knockback than a double.
  • Escaping a tight space: If you lack a fishing rod or the ceiling is too low, use a bow to jump up a two block tall wall. Do a single drawback straight up, release, and jump soon afterwards, while holding your sprint key in the direction you want to go. This may take a couple of attempts.
Fishing Rod
  • Fishing: By fishing you can get experience, a bucket which can be used to place lava and water, or even bows with insane enchantments.
  • Self/teammate boost: Use your fishing rod to boost a teammate on a land chase or in water. What few people know is that you can boost yourself forwards about one block in water if you cast your fishing rod at an 85 degree angle. It may also be casted downward at an 80 degree angle for a faster and more accurate boost.
  • Enemy knockback: When running on land with few obstructions, you can cast your fishing rod straight up or at an 80 degree angle to knock back enemies behind you. This is far-fetched, though.
  • Protection of self/teammate through shielding: If an ally is getting bow spammed in water, you can rapidly fishing rod them or punch them with your fist and they will be unable to take damage or knockback from the bow. Also, when deathmatch is 4-5 seconds away from starting, you can cast your fishing rod upwards and avoid taking damage from the inital bow shot.
  • Fire protection: When lit on fire, spam your fishing rod in the direction of your opponent while backing up. This should keep you safe while your eight seconds of fire run out. This beats simply running or charging into a sword fight.
  • Escaping a hole: Point your fishing rod straight up and cast. When it is coming back down, jump when the bobber is 5 blocks above you. Sprint in the direction you want to leave the hole, as it will knock you in a random direction.
Flint and Steel
  • Lighting people up, duh: Flint and steel can be combined beautifully with any of the other weapons, but it is not much by itself. If you are getting chased and you have no weapons, you can do a quick turn around to light them on fire, which should give you just enough time to eat.
  • Free Disposal: When fire is placed on a chest, it does not use a charge, and you are able to burn items without cost.
Sword/Bow Combo
  • First hit trick: Before going into a sword fight when you have a bow, you can do a quick single or double drawback, then quickly sprint into the fight. If you made the bow shot, you will likely get the first two hits. If you don't, they will likely get the first two hits.
  • Turnaround bow shots: When being chased by a team, use your bow to do turn around bow shots repeatedly. Get the idea in that you are low and do not want to sword fight. Then, after one bow shot that you make, actually leap into a sword fight with a strong strafe. This will catch them by surprise.
Sword/Fishing Rod Combo
  • First hit trick: Cast your fishing rod before going into a fight at about 6-9 blocks away. This will guarantee you the first hit. Always follow up with a strafe. If you get knocked back to the point where you are more than five blocks away, do another quick cast to beat them to the first hit.
  • Post-fight finish off: Cast your rod after you have gained the upper hand in a fight and the opponent is running, but still has enough hearts to not die to a single bow shot. Do not constantly cast your rod, as this does nothing but make them more alert. Only cast your rod in a forest, hilly area, corner, or other location where a fishing rod will cause them to be knocked away from their ideal running path. Cast your rod up at roughly a 10 degree angle for flat ground.
Sword/Flint and Steel Combo
  • Quick turnaround: Quickly turn around when being chased by an individual or team to light them on fire. You usually suffer a hit or two when doing this, whether it works or not, so don't do it on less than three or four hearts.
  • Choke point: Place a fire in an area where a chaser has to travel through to get to you. They will have to either extinguish the flame or catch on fire, both of which slows them down.
  • Sword charge + surprise: When going in for a charge, quickly hotkey to your fns when you are 5-8 blocks away to light them up. This is nearly impossible to predict. The biggest mistake made here is failing to quickly switch back to sword in time to strafe and get the first hit. If your opponent ever gets out of sword range in a sword fight, you can quickly hotkey to flint and steel them.
  • Runner light-up: If someone refuses to fight you and you happen to get two or three blocks behind them, put a flint and steel out in front as far as you can and they will be forced to fight you, on fire.
  • Unexpected fire: When being chased by a heavily geared person or a team, just stop. It looks like lag on their screen. Place a fire two blocks in front of you, (preferably so that they cannot see it) and they won't be able to comprehend what has happened, as they were once chasing you, but are now on fire with you running the opposite direction. I would not recommend this if the person is constantly swinging their sword, if the person is experienced, or if you are especially low.
  • AFK light-up: Just go out and stand somewhere where people will see you. Maybe throw out a couple feathers here and there to make it look like you are sorting your inventory. F5 until you see someone coming, then do a quick hotkey to flint and steel, then back to sword.
  • Bow spammer's delight: If someone won't stop shooting you, place a fire behind them as you run by, (they most likely will not see it) then do a quick hit with a sword or bow to knock them into it. Or they will get scared and just walk into it as your charge at them.
  • Ghost fire: Place fire on glass, glowstone, chests (use shift), or iron bars. This fire is invisible assuming the map is somewhat lit up and the light isn't super obvious. (coughcoughnotMoonbase9)This is effective on teams, as you stand behind the invisible fire and they charge straight at you. You can also place it around corn on certain maps and lead chasers into it, as long as you remember where you placed it.
  • Not-so-crafting: Pretend to be crafting and suddenly light someone up who is coming from the side. This is risky, as you could just as well be attacked from the back.
  • He is crafting: If you encounter someone crafting or in a chest, you can light them up then quickly proceed to jump and deliver pure critical hits. If you have a diamond sword and the opponent has full iron, this will kill them in exactly two seconds if you do it right.
  • I'm really really bad: Approach an individual or team and place one really awful flint and steel. Make sure they see it. Throw in a really bad bow shot if necessary. The point is to make them think you are loopy. Then begin running. Proceed to carry out any of the above tactics and you will likely catch them off guard.
  • Lightning 360: When being chased, do a quick 360 spin and at 180 degrees, place a flint and steel. This is superior to a classic turnaround flint and steel because it is faster and allows you to place it anywhere within your scope. It is also good if you are running up a hill that is so steep you cannot sprint, as this will not slow you down.
  • Flint and Steel No-knockback: When on a mountain or a thin bridge in the sky that would be easy to fall off, light the ground beneath you on fire and you will not take any knockback. This will allow you to knock your enemy off first. Best when gapples or water is available.
  • Suicide Fire: Light a fire when charging into a fight so that both your enemy and self step into it. This is a risky tactic that may be useful when fighting with a gear disadvantage. Best when a gapple is available.
Bow/Fishing Rod Combo:
  • Mega teammate boost: When chasing someone in the water with your teammate, first use your fist to boost, then fishing rod, then shoot your teammate if they are in the way of your enemy for a final boost.
  • Rod/bow duo: If you are teaming with someone and are getting charged by an overgeared player, if both of you bow and fishing rod spam, you are able to keep him away from you while lowering his health slightly. This may lead to frustration on his part, which makes him susceptible to a quick flint and steel or sword critical hit.
  • Escaping a 3 block deep hole: Do a double drawback straight up on your bow and release. Right afterwards, cast your fishing rod straight up. When either the arrow or the bobber is five blocks above you, jump. With a bit of luck, you should be able to escape. If you do a full drawback, then double, then fishing rod, then jump, it may be possible to escape a four block deep hole.
Bow/ Flint and Steel Combo:
  • Light-up + bow spam: After lighting a person on fire, if you are low, you can shoot fully charged arrows at the lit-up person. This is effective due to their immobility caused by the fire, their great visibility, and their obstructed vision caused by your fire.
  • Fake bow light-up: Pretend to be about to shoot a charging player, then hotkey to flint and steel and light them up when they are 5-10 blocks away. This usually comes at the cost of one or two hits, but it is very unexpected.
Fishing Rod/Flint and Steel Combo:
  • Frustration light-up: Spam your fishing rod at a charging enemy. After hitting them back a couple times, causing frustration, place a flint and steel right in front of you and they will waltz right into it.
  • Gone fishin': Fish for a while at spawn or another open area. You may actually get experience or a rare item. The point is that someone will assume you are unaware and charge you. When they do this, suddenly hotkey to your flint and steel to light them up.
Sword/Bow/Fishing Rod Combo:
  • Extreme smash: While alongside water or a cliff and being chased, do a double drawback on your bow, shoot the chaser, then hotkey to your fishing rod for a single fishing rod hit, then do one critical sword hit while sprinting directly after the fishing rod hit. This will not only do 7-10 hearts of damage, it will knockback a still target around ten blocks.
Other Tactics:
  • Only-one-weapon-duo: If you are in a team of two and only one of you has a weapon, have the one without a weapon rapidly punch the other, avoiding critical hits, when entering a sword fight. Not only does this make it look like you are not teamed, it prevents the teammate with a weapon from taking damage from the opponent with a weapon. A fishing rod can be substituted for a fist, but that is more difficult.
  • Sword + vine tactic: Have some vines in your inventory where you would normally have food. While running alongside a wall, innocently place some vines on the wall two blocks from the ground. Then turn around and knock your opponent into the vines with your sword. They will be locked into the vines and you will be able to easily finish them off without them escaping. They will be unable to hit you much because of how slowly players travel in vines.
  • Endless Steve chase: Chasing a guy in water who needs to die? Drop your weapon that you have been holding and switch to another as he reaches down to pick it up. You should be able to get three blows on him.
  • Enderpearl snipe: Throw your enderpearl right at a runner who is low to finish him off. It does damage to you as well as him.
  • Enchanting bottle stun: Chuck an enchanting bottle at someone in a similar way to a fishing rod. This will catch them completely by surprise, and they might even think you are their friend for a moment, until you wreck them.
  • Cake save: Got cake and being chased? Rather than placing it on the ground to get some lame, low saturation food without stopping, try running into a house and placing it in front of the doorway. You're safe.
  • Late game innocence: Instead of wearing full iron to deathmatch or pretending to have nothing, try wearing leather boots, iron pants, gold chestplate, and gold helmet. This looks far less intimidating and convincing, but still provides a solid 6.5 armor bars, which is the equivalent of 19 hearts. Full iron is the equivalent of 25 hearts.
  • Bringing vines to deathmatch: Many deathmatch arenas contain tall structures in the center that you can climb on top of with vines to wait out deathmatch. (Holiday Resort) Make sure you check to make sure you have the most kills first, though, with the /bug command. (5 or more kills is a near guarantee.) You can also use an enderpearl to get up there.
  • Loot luring: Leave a piece of iron armor or golden apple out in an open area with a variety of seeds, saplings, leather armor, crappy swords, and bad food. Someone will come by and try to get the one valuable item. Make sure the pile is next to a tree or something that you can pop out of to deliver quick blows to the passer by.
  • Refresh spam: Hold down F3 and spam A to have all mob entities within your render revealed. It is more effective with a higher render, though a lower render is more effective for finding individuals without refreshing.
  • Fishing rod/boat slick getaway: You are being chased off of land into the water, but you have a boat and a fishing rod in your hotbar. Running at the shore top speed, place the boat where you are about to land in the water then quickly hotkey to your fishing rod and snag the boat. You will be able to get one more jump on the boat. As you hit the surface of the water, reel in the boat so that the team cannot follow suit. This will send the boat swinging past you, but not too fast. You should be able to either hop on as it goes above you, or swim out to it afterwards. You can also just break it if you want a shootout.
  • Boat kill: When being chased atop high ground, jump down into water and place a boat where your enemy is about to land. They will die of fall damage. Useful on SG 5, SG Highway, and Holiday Resort.
Dark red = rare; new; needs testing; may not work as stated

Please alert my of any other interesting tactics you have heard of people using, as I want to truly make this a library of tactics. Give your honest feedback. Enjoy!

Honestly, this is one of the best pvp guides I have ever seen so far. I learned a lot of new tricks from you, now I just have to remember to use them in game. :D
PS: I love the names that you give to your tactics! :)

The enchant bottle stun is genius. I've never thought to do that! I might have to try it out ;)

I did indeed. It was a brilliant idea! I also theorized that it could be done with a fist, as I think you can't take more melee damage while you are already flashing red from melee damage. Many of these tactics still need to be tested, especially the sword + vine tactic. I simply can't perform many of these effectively.

Thanks for the input! I hope everyone who reads this thread learns something, as many PvP guides these days are nothing but repeated information and summarized Huahwi videos.

I first saw JustAHotDog use it. It's kind of an odd tactic, and it doesn't work on everybody, but it surprises people every time.

I added some more tactics to most of the sections if anyone is interested. Be sure to check out the fishing rod/boat getaway, it could be very useful. Cheers!

This is easily the best guide of I've ever seen! I know many of these, but I learned a thing or two from this. Some of these are fantastically tactical moves I would've never thought of.

Out of curiousity, which ones had you never seen before? Also, are there any that seem to need more explanation or don't seem to work? The few comments this thread has received haven't told me how I can improve it. Thanks for the feeback!

TL;DR,
It looks like a well-thought, in-depth guide that I'm sure will teach a few people something. :)

The ones on escaping deeper holes and about half the strategies in Other Tactics are things I've never head of before. And really, the thread is already great. The only way I could think of improving it is to add video. That would just be over the top though :p
