The rod could miss and for me it doesn't stun me nearly 80% of mcsg use the rod so I know when it's coming

The recurring theme I'm seeing here is practise. That's exactly right, you need to practise what you know for it to pay off. Having good internet and ping definitely help, so play in the region you get the best ping to. I get almost god-ping or 0ms to AU MCGamer, but my internet's uptime and reliability fall short of average (my internet is guaranteed to have at least 30 minutes of downtime per day while my DNS server has an identity crisis). A PvP resource pack also helps; you'd be surprised how much a purpose-made resource pack can improve some people's PvP (myself included).

Clicking fast also helps, but that takes a while and it's pretty much going to make you more prone to arthritis if you do the 'jitter click' where you flex your muscles and apply that action to your mouse click.
Clicking at say, 10 times per second won't make you get 10 hits in a second, it will reduce the delay you get from Minecraft's hit limit (you can only take damage or deal damage so much in one second) so that you can get the hit earlier than somebody who was clicking at, say, 5 times a second (which is about average).

Hope this helped.

I got you bro.

If you wanna strafe a guy then you need to make sure they don't expect it because it'll be avoided no matter what. To get combos then obviously you need good ping but that's not exactly always the case, you can get combos if you're at the right place at the right time.

If the person does get a huge combo then run away for a bit then fight again and hopefully you get the right hits :p
idk if there's anything else to "let" you get combos because I've not gone on the MCSG servers since forever, lol.

You are in the same situation as me. Every time I try to strafe*, they always get the first hit and i get launched back. Never fails. I can't strafe at all even though i try multiple different ways to do it but it never works. The only reason I can win a lot of my games is I'm good with flint and steel and good with fishing rod + charge straight at them.
Story of my life.

This happens to me almost every time!

You know, that awkward moment where you're both circling around each other, swinging, trying to get the first few hits. I always get hit first, then hit again in a double hit.

To become a better PvP'er, as much as I don't want to sound as a Huahwi fan boy, you should really check out his tips and tricks video, it helped me a lot. Practice makes perfect as well. For this, MCGamer provides 'BattleGrounds'.

Clicking super fast helps a lot. There are strats such as holding your mouse like you would, but have your index finger in a "claw-fashion", at the back of the left-click button. Hope I helped a bit! :p

I use an odd tactic that I don't usually see anyone else doing.
I sprint around to the left or right of someone, as if I were doing a high jump IRL, and try to get to the side of them or behind them, then jump to attempt a crit, then try to quickly get behind them before they hit me again, and so on. After they start to run away to get some distance for a bow shot, I pull out the FnS and finish them off with fire. If you ever get in trouble in a water battle, always go under the other player, it's not easy to hit someone below you.

Also, your hand won't hurt, you can do it for an extended period of time, no arthritis, etc! :D

Honestly I taught myself all these tips and tricks but if I didn't know one thing about PvP I would watch these

no rods or fns
Rods and fns were both in v1 iirc, just the way people use them has evolved. There's really no point trying to fight against the evolution of MCSG tactics; it's inexorable. You're better off embracing it and trying to keep up.
