Hey guys. Slav here and I though I help some people out and explain some theories about ping. So let's get into it.
What is ping?
Ping is basically the speed at which your PC is talking to the server. These speed are incredibly fast (we are talking in the milliseconds).
What can affect ping?
1. Distance - The farther you live from the server the longer it takes to get a response from the server.
2. Weather - Although this is uncontrollable from your end it still affects the ping. If its hot out the wires on the poles that the packets travel through expand there for creating more distance for packets to travel. Same with vise-versa where if its too cold the packets actually get slowed down because of temperature. You need a perfect day to get the best ping.
3. Wireless - If you are using the WiFi in your house to connect to the internet then you are adding more distance to your connection. Also with WiFi a loss of packets occurs. This is uncontrollable. If you are going to use WiFi to connect then I suggest getting as close as possible to the router or just use a wire.
4. Speedtest - Speedtest lies. Well... let's put it this way. Speedtest test's and pings to the server closest to you. So for example if I live in New York and use Speedtest to test to my connection, it will test to a server in New York and not the location of the server (which I believe is in Arizona). There is a way to accurately check your ping using CMD or command prompt that will test from your PC to MCSG servers directly. Here is a vid on this because it would take to long to explain in writing.
What is good ping?
Anywhere from 0-60 is good ping or 5 bar connection. 60-100 is 4 bar connection and you don't want anything more then that.
How does ping affect pvp?
Basically if you have high ping it takes longer for the server to receive your movement and vise versa. So if you are fighting a player that has 30 ping while you have 120, the server will receive his movements before yours. There is where we get the term "lagging". So the lower the ping the better your pvp.
I hope this helped some of you guys out.
