Personally I think 1.8 will come out within the next week or two. What Mojang has released (not much, but everything they have) has already been implemented into Mincraft in the new snapshots and its just about time for the bug fixing and testing, hence why I think the pre release will come out 2 days before 1.8 officially releases.
