~Hello

I'm thinking about possibly getting into YouTube but I'm having some... erm.... issues. I want to record MCSG, some other games, and vlogging. I'm not gonna worry about any channel art, intro, or outro right now; but instead, I need help with a webcam/facecam in my gaming videos.

As you've probably seen before, some Youtubers have a video of themselves in the top right/left corner during their videos. I want to have a little square with a flower border, but I honestly have no clue how to do that. I've tried before, but miserably failed :p. I'm not a tech person, so if you explain to me how to do it, please pretend like you're talking to a 6 year old (no but rly, I'm not kidding :3)

Also, I know I said I wouldn't worry about this right now, but.... how do people put a video inside their video o_O... For example, at the end of a video, some Youtubers have a box of the previous video.. This is really confusing to me; again, I've tried and failed...

Thanks! I ish newb

It's really late, so my reply won't be very detailed. I'll be able to type up more tomorrow when I'm awake.

For the border issue, you'll need a video editor (I used Sony Vegas) that allows multiple video tracks. You'll need one track for the main video itself, that will be the first layer. The second track you'll insert the facecam footage, and then the third you'll need the border over that (just a standard file). You will have to look up a tutorial on YouTube specifically on how to size all of this up good, as it got a little complicated on Sony Vegas when I did it. But after you do it once, it'll stick with you forever. It could be different for other programs, but I'm guessing most of the quality ones allow multiple video/audio tracks.

Ah, the layers thing makes perfect sense. Thank you very much!

Good luck with your YouTube career! Just a few tips to get you started.
  1. Be your self
  2. Don't tell anyone at school
  3. Get a good mic, recorder etc (in order to be successful you must gather some money)
  4. Contact a graphics designer to make your banner etc
  5. Make your videos a particular style, be different and be patient.
If your ever struggling don't hesitate to pm me on skype or YouTube (in my signature) I'll give you any advice!

What's wrong with telling people at school?

Depends if they are going to be supportive.

No, the problem is, if you tell them, and they look at it, they will pick quotes they say about it, it gets really annoying and also embarrassing; and if your really unlucky, teachers get to find out, so just when you thought that your maths teacher couldnt get any worse than stalking you in the internet...then, yeah you get ma point

I told all of my friends in the dorms about my YouTube within the first month or so at University. I suppose it's a bit different in highschool, as the maturity levels shoot way down. But in college, things change so much and me YouTubing gave people a reason to be generally interested and intrigued with what I did. You being vocal and talking for so long in front of an audience is something that I bet a lot of your peers wish they had the guts to do, even if it was while commentating over a video game.

If you tell people at school, act like you love doing it (you should if you plan on it), back your opinion strongly, and if they really get to you, tell them that you get paid for doing something that's actually fun.. unlike them. Tell them that, even if you aren't getting paid. Either way, I think its ridiculous that teenagers make fun of peers who YouTube, gaming or otherwise. I think everyone would be shocked to know how many people in college play Minecraft!

I know nothing about running a channel, but I have a little advice because I have seen so much youtube. Some is really enjoyable and some... not so much. Since your channel is probably going to be MCSG centered, make your first couple of videos MCSG solo/duo gameplay. Commentaries with tons of people are not fun to watch because it's like watching people hang out. Since you are quite good, you would probably get a lot of attention by doing some hardcore solo commentary on higher servers.

Once you get a few MCSG videos out, then you can try various series to freshen things up. Also, everyone digs a montage. Strategy and chest route videos will bring newcomers to your channel. Finally, make yourself special in some way, whether it be by a skin, texture pack, personality, etc... Best of luck!

It'll be about 25% MCSG, 25% Other Games, 50% Vlogging :)
