Yeah, I know this thread was made a little while ago, but it's still relevant and not a necro.
That video makes some
great points, I must admit. It highlights issues within present-time society. However, some people don't consider them issues, and some people even go so far as to feel like they're a part of life because of how much they've been incorporated with everyday life. Large companies are pushing for more online resources, more automated systems, larger databases, more sales. It all revolves around people using more technology. It's being
encouraged by those in power.
Okay, I have to say, I'm torn between loving and hating this video. I completely, entirely agree with it... but at the same time, it's basically rejecting and denouncing my way of life. I know that sounds bad, but I've let my life revolve around technology. MCSG Forums, League of Legends, TeamSpeak, etc. etc. etc.
Social media. What is social media? Media that revolves around your friends? That's how I put it. Your feed is dictated by your interests and those of your friends.

Social media is the social interaction among people in which they create, share or exchange information and ideas in
virtual communities and
networks.
[1]Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define
social media as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of
Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of
user-generated content."
[2] Furthermore, social media depend on mobile and web-based technologies to create highly interactive platforms through which individuals and communities share, co-create, discuss, and modify user-generated content. They introduce substantial and pervasive changes to communication between organizations, communities, and individuals. -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_media
What are friends? I think they're someone who you can joke around with, have fun, cry on their shoulders if you have to. Someone that will be there for you when you need it, but also will force you to grow up and stand up on your own when you need to.

Does that mean that someone you've never seen in real life cannot be your friend? Does that say that just because you don't know each other IRL, that you can't have a relationship? No! No, no, no. I brought two people together (they now both hate me) and they found out that they live like 20 minutes apart from each other, and they're now in a relationship, in the romantic sense. I've met people who have been my friend for over a year. We may not talk to each other as often as once before, but we still count each other as friends, and I would trust that they would help me if I needed it just as much as an IRL friend would.
Oh, uhm, but... this is all coming from a guy who has
0 IRL friends. :3 So I am a bit biased.
