The dandelion....
Known to the scientific community as taraxacum at its most basic family. We pick them, we prod them, we rudely bowl them over and cut them down with lawn mowing equipment. Have we ever stopped to consider how we hurt these poor beautiful, innocent, little beings?
Let's first stop to consider why we humans hate the dandelion. How could we? It's a gorgeous, lovely little yellow flower. The only reason we find to classify it as a weed and discard it like so much, literally, chaff is because we cannot control its growth. Why can we not control its growth you ask? Because humanity is afraid of this little flower, however dainty it might seem. The seeding rate is astronominal: 98% under normal growing conditions. It's a hearty plant and can survive quite a bit of punishment.
We seem to hate what we cannot control. Instead, why shouldn't we fence a pretty clump of dandelions in and include them in our gardens? Short or tall, these flowers are neither aesthetically nor aromatically disturbing or gross. They easily form symbiotic relationships and bonds with other nearby plants, thereby helping to bolster the growth of those around them. So why can't we, high-up humans, develop that same fondness for this respected member of the flower community? The bees do it every day. In fact, dandelions seem to be a bee's favorite flower. By uprooting dandelions right after a bee has just spent its time pollinating them. We are even wasting the bee's time here, then. Do it for the bees. Do it for yourselves. STOP THE MURDER!!!!
((This ode was inspired by the numerous dandelions growing in both my front and back yards. It pains me to pick them, mentally - as well as maybe physically as my knees are only getting older. Anywho, enjoy.))
