There probably were some broken leaves, you didn't provide screenshots of every angle. And it is possible to craft a diamond sword off spawn.

You can get a crafting table out of a tier III if you're lucky enough to find one of the little bastards blessings. This was 99.999% not the case in this scenario, but heyho as the not necessarily jolly ole' brits say it.
