When you strafe to one side, do you stop holding down "W" or hold it down? Because when I hold W when strafing I run into the person.

You hold it down for the most part, and if you feel you're about to get close enough for them to hit you, you can let go in order to maintain the combo. It's also good to quickly release and repress W after each hit as this makes you deal a lot more knockback.

It really depends, although when trying to get people into a combination it can work if you tap "w" while holding the strafe key, this causes knockback and helps combos!
