Different Ping then showed?

Ello everyone, Im a casual MCSG player and I play on the CA Server
When I hover over the grren bars in the 'play multiplayer' screen, its shows I have a ping of 40
But when Im actually on the server in game, my ping is 80
Help me out if you can

Ping = ./ping ÷ 2

Edit: Minecraft is sometimes horribly inaccurate, I suggest using a Command Prompt and using the command "ping <server address>"

Ping information from the multiplayer screen or any in-game command is usually inaccurate. Ping from the Command Prompt or from Network Utility/Terminal on Mac to get a better idea of what your ping is.
