The staff is constantly working on the servers, and sometimes that means whitelisting for an hour or so to make improvements. The server you were trying to connect to should be up.. but just in case, there are about 60 other servers you can connect to.. You can check them here: http://www.minecraftsurvivalgames.com/servers/
