What the heck are these?

I was exploring a copy I downloaded of the second map, and came across these in one of the apartment buildings. Each apartment has two of them. They use the texture for pistons all around. They don't burn. I placed a lever above one, and, as I had expected, it crashed the game when I pulled it. Here's a screenshot:

I believe this is a piston glitch that I seem to remember seeing a while back. If I remember right you can glitch the piston using a certain method and it creates what you see in the picture.
Once you have glitched the piston you can smash and pick it up and place it back down still glitched, thought this would of been fixed by now tho.
