So with the implementation of BetterSprinting mod in Minecraft 1.7.2, what happens to all the people who were banned off MCSG for the use of the mod pre-1.7.2?

On one side of the issue, someone could argue that they were using it when it wasn't allowed so their ban stays because they broke a rule.

But on the other side of the spectrum, now that it ISN'T a rule and the word is out, I think those people who did absolutely nothing wrong should -upon request made to an MCSG moderator or higher - have any ban for BSM relinquished.

That way, basically anyone who cares can come back and ask to be unbanned. Anyone, like TheBajanCanadian, who most likely don't care, can just remain elsewhere. In my mind, this is a near-perfect compromise but I would like to hear the staff's current perspective on the matter and what's to be done about it, if anything.

On a sidenote, yes, I know it would be too much to ask to have all of the mods go through and unban everyone over the course of years who used BSM. That's why I suggested a milder option.

((No, this is not for the ban disputes forum. I'm merely opening a discussion on the topic.))

Nothing will be done about previous bans for BSM for two reasons:
1. The people who were banned for using BSM in the past were breaking the rules, so they still deserve their ban.
2. BSM is still against the rules. In fact, anyone who joins the servers with the mod now gets banned.

So I'm apparently breaking the rules by playing the CA servers since they're exclusively 1.7.2 now? Am I breaking the rules if I play on 1.7.2 on the US servers then? Since the 1.6.4 people on U.S. don't have it yet?

Because technically, by that reasoning, the U.S. and EU servers are in a bit of a quandary. :/

You just want Benja back
I'm a Tomahawk fan. That would be betrayal. No. And I'm allergic to Wookiee anyways.

That and I was just grasping for a universal example scenario. I meant it in the most objective way possible.

I never said the 1.7.2 sprint is against the rules. BSM and the 1.7.2 sprint are not the same. The sprint button is a vanilla Minecraft feature, so you are free to use it on the servers that support 1.7.2. People who use 1.6.4 on the 1.7.2 servers are choosing to use that, so it is not the fault of players on 1.7.2 for their choice. :)

You're completely right, 1.7.2 and BSM are nothing alike. MAC users can now set their sprint key to CAPS lock and it's basically toggle. (Till they turn off the caps) If you just hold down the Sprint key than it's extremely OP, you don't break sprint unlike Better sprint were your sprint breaks for a split second.

Yes, but you can't use the flint & steel test to see who's using the sprint key/BSM anymore since those people who "fail" the test and keep sprinting while aflame might be 1.7 users.

So, for a question that makes me feel like a total newb again, did Devin (or Bukkit) institute some sort of command that I am insofar ignorant of that shows what version of Minecraft a player is running? How can you tell, essentially? :p

Yes, 1.7.2 sprint is not against the rules, if it was why would MCSG allow 1.7.2 on their server.

On what you said "People who use 1.6.4 on the 1.7.2 servers are choosing to use that, so it is not the fault of players on 1.7.2 for their choice." wouldn't that apply to Optifine users and then apply if we allowed BSM? We cannot force them to install it and right know the game is unfair in all ways as some users have the new sprint, relatively exactly to BSM.

I apologize for not clarifying my question:

How can you tell the difference between 1.6.4 BSM and 1.7 BSM/sprint? Is there some sort of serverside command in the MCSG plugin or Bukkit that tells mods which version of Minecraft we're running?

Just a few small corrections -

1. BSM is still disallowed, however moderators can no longer ban for it because the servers do this already.
2. Those who were hacking, and broke the rules twice, will remain permabanned.
3. 1.7 sprint is not BSM.
Partially BSM is not the new sprint, but the difference is so relative. The difference is just a button. Just for a button were are making all this drama? Wouldn't it be easy to allow it? Its not cheating as its exactly the same, also mac users have the possibility to make the new sprint exactly as BSM.
Also, not to mention Mojang is not going to fix the "glitch" Mac users have for setting their sprint to caps lock.

They can tell because BSM modifies the game file.
For example, if they wanted, they could ban optifine users. The system would detect the small data the server receives that said you're using optifne.
