Why does this server lag so much, it doesn't happen often but when it does it's unbearable. I've have optifine installed, my computer is on max preformance, and I frequently do ghost fix whenever its possible. is it my fault or are the servers just overloaded?

You must perform the ritual of lag removal. This is how it's done.

1. Run around in circles for 42 seconds.
2. Cut off some skin on your left arm right above your wrist.
3. Place the dripping blood on the side of your computer.
4. Get better Internet.

Done, hope this helped.

The lag is caused by the MCSG plugins and minecraft 1.5 not being entirely compatible, thus producing numerous glitches.
It likely isn't your computer, it's just these glitches all piling up and causing lag, and all the extra traffic the servers have on the weekend.

If this still happened before the 1.5 update, you should probably consider getting a better computer. If it's a recent thing, then it's just a problem caused by the MCSG plugins and minecraft 1.5 not working well together, like duck said.

the MCSG plugin is way more complivated than you think it is, often lag is caused by DDoS'ing (google dat) and the server being overloaded, I could List all the reasons of the lag, but It wont fix it so I guess you'll have to live with it.

Well, it's usually caused by bad networking from your modem to the servers, but Optifine doesn't correct internet/ server lag, sadly enough. it only corrects FPS/ gameplay performance. the MCSG plugin isn't too compatible with 1.5 because of mainly minecraft glitches, and the fact that there are still bugs with the plugin and 1.5. I get the same thing, and yes it is very horrific to go through, but ya'know, nothings perfect :p
