What Exacltly Happens When You Follow Someone?

I just started following CaptButterToast, and I was wondering what notifications (if any) you get when following a person. Is it just there so you can quickly click to the person from your profile, or do you get updates on their statuses, forum posts, etc.?

Also, if there is a thread answering this, please link it and lock this one. I don't want to waste space on the forums. ]

On the forums, it shows when they are online, like this.
