You have to sign-up, then buy the game, download the client and login. Then you can access MCSG.
Also; Minecraft Auto-Updates, so there is no such thing about "what version should I use" unless you use certains mods.

Download Minecraft, once you're done with that, you can access the servers. If you updated to a later version, download Minecraft Version Changer and that should solve your problems.
