If you have photoshop go to the option that says hue/saturation
Move the bar around to change the colors and then save the file as a .png

Use paint.net, and press "control" "shift" and "u"

I use Paint.NET and the iron swords that I try to re-color don't look good, that's why I prefer Photoshop (when I had it) for coloring the iron swords because of the Black and White settings.

You can just change the levels, and it makes it less distorted. (Right now paint.NET is crashing for me, gonna see if there are levels in Photoshop)

I also find Photoshop more useful because you can change the color of black and white items (example: flint & steel). If you check in Photoshop, you can change the color (Black, white, gray) of you want to. That's why I find it more useful for making iron-swords.
