Hey SAO fans! :)
I started watching SAO three days ago and I finished the entire series up to this point. I also finished reading the first Light Novel yesterday, I am completely in love with this. But like every Sunday I have to spend three hours on a train, so I decided to start working on my own little project, a fan-fiction styled alternate ending to the first Arc. This is only the beginning and I'm hoping to find more time to keep working on this. Also the first four paragraphs are quoted from the novel itself which can be found on page 283 (of the 322 page version). The end of the quote and the beginning of my own story will be marked with a "-".
Enjoy. :)

“Kirito, since you figured out my true identity, I will reward you with an opportunity: you can have a one-on-one duel with me, right here and right now. Of course, I will negate my immortality status. If you win, the game will be cleared immediately, and all the players will be able to log out. What do you say…?”

As soon as she heard this, Asuna began to squirm in my arms, trying desperately to move her paralyzed body as she shook her head.

“No, Kirito-kun…! He’s trying to get rid of you first… right now… right now you have to back down…!”

My instincts told me that was the best course of action. This guy was an administrator who could intervene with the system. Even if he claimed that it would be a fair fight, there was no way to know whether or not he was somehow manipulating the system. The best choice would be to retreat now and come up with a countermeasure with the others.

But… -

No… Asuna was right. Even if it would turn out to be a fair fight, he was still the creator, he knew all my tricks. I couldn’t die now, not for Asuna’s sake. I slowly looked down at her. She was staring at me, with an overwhelming amount of emotions all mixed in that one look.

Around us it had become eerily quiet. No one was moving, well the paralysis effect was still binding everyone down. But I felt like everyone was holding their breaths, waiting for me to answer.

Very reluctantly I turned my head away from Asuna and gazed in the direction of Kabaya who was still standing in the same spot. He looked almost like the drawing of a medieval hero, who stood victorious on the battlefield with the corpses of his slain foes all around him. This image wasn’t even far off from the truth, we were all his opponent now, and if he wanted to he could wipe us all out with a single command.

But he just stood there, and looked in our direction, his face completely straight, no sign of emotion.

Very slowly I started shaking my head. I felt a slight movement coming from Asuna, who was still wrapped up in my arms, but I continued glaring at the Red Paladin.

“Very well” he stated, and as he said that a smile covered his face, so filled with brutal confidence that I instantly felt glad I had declined the duel.

Kabaya glanced down at his sword, then looked back at me. “I will be seeing you on the hundredth floor then.” The words struck me like lightning, and a cold darkness spread through my body, like a bad premonition. I shook off this feeling and kept watching him. His face turned back to the expressionless mask as he turned around and started walking towards the dungeon entrance, his posture straight as ever.

Just before exiting he turned around one more time. “Good luck.” As he said that I saw something in his eyes that I had never seen before but he turned away again before I could make out what it was, and disappeared.

Asuna slowly sat herself up again and wrapped her arms around me. I could feel her body trembling with anxiety.

Even though the paralysis effect had worn off, nobody moved for a long time. Then I heard some unsure footsteps heading in my direction. Klein’s voice, even though it was a bit quiet was still surprisingly clear.

“I’m so glad you didn’t accept that duel, we still need you, man.”

I glimpsed down at Asuna and she just nodded slightly. She looked like she was about to break out in tears, but somehow she managed to hold them back.

And so we sat there another while longer. People slowly started moving again and whispers and mumbling could be heard here and there.

Suddenly Agil’s voice penetrated the air.

“I think we should start heading back now…”

A silent wave of approval went through the group. As I tried to move I realized how tired I really was, my first attempt of getting up resulted in me landing on the floor again. Klein helped Asuna up and then came over to me. He seemed to be the least ropey of everyone here.

The way back was uncomfortable, an aura of depression hung over the players, especially over the members of the KoB, including Asuna. Klein came by us in a desperate attempt to cheer us up but he gave up quickly after realizing that it was to no avail.

As the group arrived at the portal everyone split up. Asuna and I teleported straight down to the 22nd floor and walked home in silence. I wished there was something I could do or say that would better her mood. But I didn’t dare to open my mouth because I was afraid I might say the wrong thing and make her even sadder, or possibly even angry.

That night I couldn’t bring myself to fall asleep, I kept tossing myself around. After a few hours I decided to go outside and catch a few breaths of fresh, cool air in the hopes of calming my stressed nerves.

As I was near the edge of the floor I could see the moon which shone bright like the stars around it. The image was so beautiful I could once again hardly believe that this was all only programmed into a virtual game.

Suddenly I tensed up, I recognized something at the edge of my scanner. But immediately after I relaxed my body again and waited. A little bit later I heard quiet footsteps in the grass and then felt a hand on my shoulder. Asuna slowly let herself sink to the ground next to me. I put my right arm around her shoulder and she let her head rest on mine. I felt her smooth, silk-like hair on my neck and caressed her arm with my hand.

“I see you can’t sleep either…” she said.

I sighed

“Kirito-kun?”

“Yeah?”

She stayed silent. After a while I asked again.

“What is it?”

“It’s just t-that I…”

Her voice became more and more shaky.

“I’m so glad you didn’t accept that duel… When I looked into your eyes back in that dungeon, I…”

She began to sob. I put both my arms around her and pressed her body into mine. She buried her face in my chest and we sat there for a while, holding each other. After a while her emotions settled down and she looked me straight in the eyes.

“I was sure I was going to lose you forever…”

She’s so strong. Just thinking about something like that would make me want to cry like a baby for hours.

Then she said, in a tone that felt like it would melt my heart.

“I love you, Kirito-kun.”

“I love you, Asuna...”

We remained on the same spot for the remainder of the night, caressing one another and warming each other on the others body as the moon slowly sank towards the horizon…
