Question about points

When you kill someone, how directly does their death have to have been caused by you in order for you to get the points? Do you have to deliver the killing blow/arrow, or if you knock them off a ledge or into lava, does that give you points too?

If you're faced with imminent death (say you've got nothing, your hunger bar's low, and you're being attacked by someone with diamond weapons and armor), and you know there's no way out, would you be able to prevent them from getting any points by committing suicide by jumping off a high ledge or into lava?

you don't get points if you knock someone into the lava, because you didn't kill him... the lava did.
And yes you can prevent it by commiting suicide.... (had some experience with that)

I believe if the /suicide command or death is initiated under 5 after a damaging hit it counts as a kill for the latter party. I hope this was of some assistance.
