For anyone that plays survival on either a server or singleplayer: ALWAYS PLAY WITH F3 ON.
I've seen several YouTubers die in survival and lose all of their stuff. They either assume that after 5 minutes are up it's gone, or that they can't get back. When you have F3 on and you die, you can write down the coordinates and come back later. Also, the chunks will most likely be unloaded, so you don't have to worry about your stuff despawning.
