No, you can join games as a regular member, but if you buy iron, gold, or diamond sponsor, it's easier to get in. You also need the full, un-cracked version of Minecraft. (The purchased version)

Yep you will have to buy minecraft to play multiplayer mode and add in the servers located on this page.
After that, you can play all the MCSG you want, but may find it hard to stay in a lobby until the game begins since people who have donated to the forums get to boot non donators (iron donor, gold donor, diamond donor).
But dont get me wrong, its possible to play some games as just a member but very easy to play when you have donated.
