Is your Minecraft sound setting muted? Or maybe your individual sounds, such as Music, Blocks, Players, and other things?

If not, in the bottom right you should be able to find a Volume button thingy, next to the Time/clock (Or somewhere else around there, if you moved it.) Click that, and go into the Mixer (Might be called Sound Mixer, I'm on Windows Vista at the moment.)
When you have Minecraft open, look at the Mixer and see if Minecraft is set to a low setting or muted altogether. If it is, unmute it or put it higher, whichever works.

I hope this helped.

Not even if you scroll to the side? It should be there, if it's not then that might be part of the issue, and I'm afraid I don't know how to fix it. Perhaps just keep reopening Minecraft until it does show up? I used to have that issue once in a while.

Try pressing F3 and S while in Minecraft, your game will freeze for 5 seconds but will turn all sounds on. Works for me every time.

Try listening to a YouTube video. If you don't have sound there either, do the following:

Right click on the sound icon in your system tray. (At the bottom of your screen, on the right hand side) And click on "Playback". Then make sure that the output is set to the correct media. To enable a device, right click on it and choose "Enable". I advise disabling all sound outputs that are not in use! Then restart Minecraft.

Again, right click on the sound icon and choose Playback. Then enable the correct output and disable all other outputs. Restart Minecraft.

He said the Minecraft icon was not there when I suggested a similar fix before.

I don't understand.. How can he be playing Minecraft with no sound if there is no icon to open Minecraft.. The fix I suggested was to correctly set the output to the right speakers. (That what the playback does) It looks like THIS.

Edit: I understand now, after going back up to your first post. My fix is for Windows 7/8, while yours is for Vista. I suppose we should ask him what OS he's using :p

I suggest just completely reinstalling MC and seeing if it was a bug if these things are not working for you.

Well, I actually used that for Windows 7, which I used for 2-3 years before I fixed up this old, but better, laptop, which has Windows Vista. There is virtually no difference, but oh well. Also I was referring to the Minecraft icon/section in the sound mixer, not to open the game itself :p
