Is there any way to check if an IGN is not taken?

You can check whether or not a name has been taken already if you go to this URL:

http://www.minecraft.net/haspaid.jsp?user=

For example, to check whether or not my name has been taken already, I would type this:

http://www.minecraft.net/haspaid.jsp?user=Nephilim_04

If the username has been taken already, the text 'true' will pop up. If the username has not been taken yet, you will receive 'false' from the website.

Just because it says true doesn't mean it's available, there can be cracked MC accounts, that only detects premium accounts.

Since you can change your name on a cracked Minecraft client at any time, it doesn't really matter. And you can't log on with them on our server anyway, only on cracked servers or servers where the online mode has been set to false. As long as the name hasn't been taken for a premium account yet, you can use it.
