Unfortunately, yes.

If your game is modded and its black. Delete META-INF in the .jar

Yes, the authentication servers are in fact down at the moment. They should be up soon hopefully.

Go on options in the launcher and press force update.

This si probably because a mod you install has broken the game files, I would suggest deleting you .minecraft folder and launching your client again, this will make a fresh copy, and you can re-install mods.
