There is a tier 1 chest before that "big,-mossy,-I-don't-know-what-it-is" which is only a few blocks away, and also the cave you exited at the start has a tier 1 chest to the right of the exit.

But y u no go tower?

This is pretty much my EXACT same route... The only difference is that I take the trapdoor gate exit.
