Whenever i go into a battle in hunger games, i fishing rod the person to get 1st hit/combo but it just goes right through them! help me plz!

my ping is actually GOOD on MCSG. considering where i live i know my ping is good. (I think i live in the same state as goldellipse and he gets 45 ping)

I don't use the fishing rod during regular pvp. It just messes me up most of the time and I usually get killed because I am too worried about the fishing rod and I don't think about using my sword.
