How can i boost my fps?

The title says it all. I average around 40 fps and i want to boost that without getting a better graphics card. I use optifine and use the best settings that can give me the best fps. But it doesnt help.
Any suggestions on how i can make my fps better?

I see. Well one thing that could help would be to give it plenty of rest, like when you're not using it keep it in sleep mode or off. That way it doesn't have to keep working and it won't tire out as much when it runs minecraft. But even when I do that, I still sometimes will get horrid FPS while playing.

Get a better computer, lol. What's your specs? I run 16gb RAM with an AMD processor that's equivalent to i7 (forgot the name of it.) and I get 150 FPS without Optifine.
