What does it mean when minecraft has crashed or minecraft has run out of memory!!!

Minecraft has crashed: Codefart, it encountered an alien string.
Minecraft has run out of memory: Your computer has something called RAM, this RAM is limited and Minecraft uses a lot of RAM. So when it runs out of memory, you're out of RAM. Restart to restore.
