Glade's Album Reviews
American Idiot
Green Day
American Idiot
Green Day
Let me start this off with an explanation on what this is. This is a little series of reviews for albums, new and old, that I, Glade_OS, will be doing on a regular basis. The album reviews will be for albums in the rock, hard rock, metal, emo, punk, grunge, alternative rock, and all sub-genres and fusions. If you have a suggestion for an album for me to review that fits one of the categories please feel free to suggest it. Also please give me feedback on these threads and I will think about said feedback. I am currently looking for graphics for the series, mainly being the end score and logo (which is currently just the underlined text ). If you want to make graphics for these threads please message me on the forums.
In these reviews there are three phases. The overview, the songs, and the conclusion. The overview will tell about the band, the songs will be the reviews of each song, and the conclusion will be an average. All things will be rated out of 10 with 10 being the highest and 1 being the lowest.
The Review
Before we start I want to apologize if I make this slightly biased. This was the first album I ever got and also the album that got me into this type of music. I hope you all understand. I will also tell if a song is explicit or not.
Song 1 - American Idiot (Explicit):
The first single off the album and the opening and title track, is American Idiot. It is also probably the most energetic and "punk" of all the songs on the album. It is also a personal favorite of mine to play along to. The song is very upbeat and doesn't let you out until the end, keeping the speed for basically the whole song. This has led me, the idiot, to give this song a 9/10
Song 2 - Jesus of Suburbia/City of the Damned/I Don't Care/Dearly Beloved/Tales of Another Broken Home(Explicit):
This is one of the longer songs off the album, clocking in at 9:09 minutes. It is technically a combination of five songs, which explains the five sub-titles. It is very energetic throughout most of the song, however it does lose its speed at the end of the song during the end of Tales of Another Broken Home and only slightly during Dearly Beloved. I currently have not jammed out to this song, or most songs on the album considering punk usually has very complicated drums. Jesus of Suburbia is often considered one of Green Day's best works, right behind Basket Case of Dookie. This has led me to give this song with way too many sub-titles a 10/10
Song 3 - Holiday (Explicit):
Next up is Holiday, and this time it is not in Cambodia (anyone?). It has a very good shuffle beat for the drums and the guitar, bass guitar, and vocals compliment it well. This song is often considered an anti-war song, mainly prevalent during the part after they have the one part where the guy announces "the representative from California has the floor." As we all enjoy our holiday, I give Holiday a 9/10
Song 4 - Boulevard of Broken Dreams (Explicit):
One of the slower songs off American Idiot, Boulevard of Broken Dreams is often known as the hangover song, with Holiday being the party song. The drum beat is rather simple, making it easy to play along to. The song mainly keeps the tempo throughout most of the song. So, even though the song is full of broken dreams, I will still being giving it a score of 8/10
Song 5 - Are We the Waiting:
This is one of the slower songs off of American Idiot. Which is odd considering it can be paired with St. Jimmy, which is probably one of the fastest songs on the album. The drum beat is rather simple along with the guitar parts. Unfortunately, I found this song sort of lacking compared to the others. It still is a very addicting song though, which has left me with giving it a 7/10
Song 6 - St.Jimmy (Explicit):
Definitely the more energetic songs on American Idiot, St.Jimmy is talking about the character St.Jimmy, who is apparently a punk rock and commits metaphorical suicide at the end. The song basically never lets up, leaving you with following it to the end. I haven't even tried to play along to this song considering the speed and complexity. St.Jimmy is, in my opinion, the second best song off the album. This has led me to give it a 10/10.
Song 7 - Give Me Novacaine:
This song probably has one of the most addicting beats in a song. It is also very easy to follow. Also, yes Novocaine is spelled like that in the title. It is mainly slower than the other songs, but is not as slow as Are We the Waiting. This has led me to give Give Me Novacaine a 9/10
Song 8 - She's a Rebel:
This is the pairing for Give Me Novacaine in some albums (I personally have the album where they are not paired). It has a medium tempo compared to other songs off the album. It is mostly "punk" considering the song is short and stripped down. It of course, follows a rebel girl basically, who is apparently inspired off someone from Bikini Kill. Even with its rebellion, I will still give it an 8/10
Song 9 - Extraordinary Girl:
The song start off with a very Southern beat, which I am not a big fan of, but will quickly head into the punk we all know. It has the average length for the album, which is at around 3 minutes. Also has a good drum beat, which does its job of keeping the tempo of the guitar and bass guitar. The instruments also compliment the vocals rather well. This has led me to give this extraordinary song a 8/10
Song 10 - Letterbomb (Explicit):
Now we go back to the explicit songs with Letterbomb. It has a tempo sort of between American Idiot and She's a Rebel. This is by far, my favorite song off the album. However, sadly it is not the most popular. But popularity doesn't necessarily determine ranking. If we were doing that, baby would get a 10 when it deserves a 2. The song has very addicting vocals and amazing drums and guitars. This has led me to light the bomb and give the song a 10/10
Song 11 - Wake Me Up When September Ends:
This song is probably the slowest song on here. It is mostly a recollection of Billie Joe's father, who died when he was young (maybe around 10 years old). It, for a slow song, is very good. With a nice drum beat, great vocals, and good guitars. The tempo is slightly picked up during the chorus but the vocals stay mostly the same. This has led me to end this with a 9/10
Song 12 - Homecoming/The Death of St.Jimmy/East 12th St./Nobody Likes You/Rock and Roll Girlfriend/We're Coming Home Again (Explicit):
And the prize for the longest sub-title goes to Homecoming. This song has a lot of tempo changes. With my favorite parts being The Death of St.Jimmy, Nobody Likes You, and Rock and Roll Girlfriend. The instruments will change from what beat they play often however, Green Day did a great job of piecing them together. Apparently, each person of the band wrote part of the song. For example, Tre Cool wrote Rock and Roll Girlfriend, which he sings. It is also the longest song on the album, coming out at 9:19 minutes. Which is 10 seconds longer than Jesus of Suburbia. This has had me ending this song reviews life with a 9/10
Song 13 - Whatsername:
This song is the closing track of the album. It also probably is a song you could play while a loved one is away. The drum beat is also very good and easy to follow. This also goes for the guitars and vocals. Although I still haven't memorized the lyrics Anyways, I will end the song reviews by giving Whatsername an 8/10
Conclusions
To conclude this, I can safely say this is one of the best rock operas and one of the best punk rock albums ever made. Considering the sales, this comes with no surprise. But since I have to end this segment of Glade's Album Reviews, American Idiot gets a score of 8.77/10. I hope you all enjoyed my review of American Idiot. Next up on the list, we are going back to some of the older rock with Appetite for Destruction by Guns N Roses. See you guys at that review ^_^Final Score:
8.77/10
